Hand 16 - I limp QJs utg and give them up to a 5BB reraise. This is why I am likely to limp AA or KK utg also, since somebody is usually nice enough to at least bump raise my limp, opening the door to a reraise. QJ misses the flop, of course.

Hand 17 - Free flop in the BB, and I get top pair. Nobody calls my 3/4 pot bet.

Hand 24 - I'm also known to limp AK utg. I don't remember what I had.

Hand 27 - I fold KJs to a 3BB raise. Just as well, since I would have been looking at an outside draw, which is usually the best you can ask for with that hand. Top split pair with KJ is always a risky holding.

Hand 31 - I fold AJo to a 4BB raise. The winning hand was 5s full of 3s, and there was a Jack on the flop next to a 5, so I really dodged a bullet there.

Hand 38 - Very straight value betting on this, but this player bluffs a lot, and therefore suspects others of bluffing also. Victim #2.

Vic's Tourney

I think I played some crappy poker, and combined with cold cards, I won one legitimate pot, stole a couple (or had the best second-best hand), and watched helplessly as everybody else built up their stacks. My worst heartbreak was not losing a hand, but pushing when I was low-stacked, and I put myself all-in w/KK*, and my opponent flips the other two kings. That would have kept me in the game, but only splitting the blinds on that hand really knocked the wind out of me.

I will fault myself for not being agressive at all. I didn't raise preflop w/anything other than the kings until I was down to 6M, not that I was getting cards worth raising with, but....

There was one particular hand where I was in the BB, and the button limps, and the SB completes. The SB had seemed pretty tight. I turn over QTos, and for a brief moment I consider raising them, but then the impulse subsides, and I choose to see the flop, decide if I have anything. Tragic mistake, as the SB limped on Qxo, and caught his two pair (Q4? Q3? Q5? It was pretty bad) and proceeded to milk me on the flop and on the river, as I had top pair, and he had two pair.

There were a few other situations where I could have considered getting agressive, but chose not to. The guy on my immediate left was playing agressive, so I was hoping that me might do my raising for me, but it never seemed to work out that way.

The worst part in the cold card situation is when you feel you've got accurate reads on certain players, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. I felt there were at least 3 players whose chips I could have sucked up if I could catch hands when they had second best hands, but I wasn't even catching second best hands. These three players were also, in my opinion, not decent bluffing candidates at all.

Wah wah wah.

PS:: Techapparatus - I'm dying to know what you reraised me with on that 993 flop. I have a hard time believing that you had a nine, but I did believe that there was at least a 60% chance that you had me beat.

PPS: Good game overall. I liked the blind structure, I liked the players. If I get a chance to go back, I will offer to be the dedicated dealer at one table, as I like having a dedicated dealer better than a rotating dealer. The action tends to go much smoother that way. Extra props to the gracious hosts for offering some tasty beverages.

*Coincidentally, my first hand at the cash table, I get dealt KK, raise with it, get one caller, who calls my flop bet, checks the turn, and bets the pot on the river. I made a crying call to see his trip 4s, and he turns over AA.

My first Deep Stacks Tourney on PokerTards

I didn't make it through the first level, but got donked just as I would have in any other tourney. Check out this stellar play on hand 17.

(Deep Stacks is 5000 in chips, 30 minutes blinds. Take your time, pick your moments, etc. )

FNJ - OK, I've got two pair, and I think it's a reasonable assertion that the raiser did not make it 6BB on AJ, based on what I'd seen. I guess we could also consider pocket Kings, (or the unlikely) Tens or Queens too. It's also easy to visualize the other two calling with AJ, since I had already seen Mr. Burger call a similar raise with AJ, and stick around on a flush board with two pair to win.

Let's test the waters via a check raise....

FNJ This call took me maybe 5 seconds to make. I ruled out AJ, and was very suspicious of trips. He turns over AA, so let's count his outs:

2 Aces
3 Kings
4 Jacks

I guess that's not a ridiculous move on his part. Given that this is deep stacks, he could have considered seeing the turn for a mere 260 more, but dammit, he had aces.

FNJ Not my finest hour. In the end, my hunch was right that I was ahead on the flop, but I didn't consider how many outs top pair actually had. I was only the 61% favorite at the flop, so his move was not as ridiculous as it seemed at the moment. But man, the thought of doubling up was just too tantalizing to walk away from. In retrospect, I was the donk.

N'erk Tourney

Live game with weird structure (50 in chips, 30 minute blinds, 1-2,2-4,3-6,4-8,5-10, 10-20). I was in trouble from the very first hand.

AKo - raise to 10, 2 callers.

Miss the flop and check, another player goes all in on the turn and I fold. He turns over J-9o to knock out another player. This caller was the table bully for my first hour, playing any two cards and winning. After that, almost any hand I was involved in was an all-in situation on my part. Here's a few.

#1 Me w/KJo, smaller all-in w/TJo, table bully w/35o. I pair to survive.
#2 Me w/A7o v AKo, I make a straight to survive.
#3 Me w/K9s v Ax and Jx. I catch a pair of kings to survive.
#4 Me w/A2o v AA. I fail to survive.

I bubbled #10 out of 40.

FrankNagaiJr collected 6190 from pot

I just checked the odds, and here's the story:
On the flop - I was the 42.12% underdog. (If NYC had two pair such as A4, then I was the 48.79% underdog, damn near a coin flip.)

When NYC reraised, there was 2100 in the pot, and it costs me 900 to call. If could see both cards for 900, that's a no-brainer call. However, I knew I needed to see both cards to have my outs, so if I put in 2300 more, I either win the pot outright, or I'm paying 2345 to potentially win 6190, which is good enough odds for me, especially since I'm the bigger stack and I can afford to take a chance when I've got decent pot odds.

$ Watch and almost a victory lap

Boosted back up to $295.38 after dipping down as low as 205.

Better still, I just took 2nd in the social group tourney. In the heads up, I pressed too hard at the wrong moments and then I was low stacked and couldn't wait. Plus my competitor was no cupcake.

I knocked out a bunch of my colleagues in the 27 player event, and I was getting crazy good cards to do it with. I saw KK at least four times, and AA at least 3, to say nothing of a few QQ and JJ hands. Barely saw big slick at all. I also took advantage of my credibility with a few well timed bluffs, picking my spots carefully and never sticking my neck out too far.

I'm tempted to blog the thing, but it would take hours, and give away my plays too much to my opponents. This wouldn't be a problem, but I tend to tailor my plays to specific opponents, so I'd have to rewrite the book if I confessed.

Big dip back down to $243.77. I was up to 392 at one point, and started playing games I had no business playing. I lost a bunch of money at PLO and OHL.

I played a 2$ LOHL tournament before bed last night. In a field of 603, I was #124 out of 350 when I went to bed. When I checked this morning, I survived down to #104 before being blinded to death. I'm starting to get the hang of OHL, and I think it's trickier than HE, as playing tightly and readjusting based on the flop is more crucial still than in HE.

I also joined a 550 player 1$ stud tourney, and made it to #124. I might have done better, but I bluffed too frequently, and the player to my immediately left started raising me every time I came in. I lost patience and bluffed anyhow. I also saw my first rolled up kings, which I limped along with five other players, we all checked fourth street, and when I bet fifth street I didn't get a single caller. (That's probably why I started bluffing too much.)

Hi/Lo Stud

For funzies, I signed up for a 1$ stud hi/lo tourney on 'tards. Not having played it before, I think I did pretty well. In a field of 624, I was #30 out of 121, when I decided to stop playing. Sure, I could play for 3 more hours for the chance to win 100$, but that's not a good ROI. I joined the tourney just to get a feel for the game.

Requirements to do well:
1) Understand starting requirements and adhere to them.
2) Choose appropriate bluffing opportunities.
3) Push good starters, push good hands.
4) Recognize when you're beat.
5) Avoid getting into a traffic jam for half the pot, especially with anything less than a lock-ish hand.

I'll check back later today to see what my final place was before I got anted to death. (57th out of 624, for a payout of $1.56, or a net profit of 46 cents. Whoo-hoo
!)

Foxwoods

Had some evenings to kill in Connecticut.

Stud: 1-3 spread. Lost some money on Aces & 6s to a boat. Won some money on a nice draw that hit. Played tight and didn't bleed too badly otherwise. Slight loss.

2-4 Limit Session 1: Weak/loose table where I wasn't catching cards. Played tight and bled, lost patience, went home. Slight loss.

NL 1-2 Session 1: All-in on my third hand and lose to a set. I go back to limit. big loss.

2-4 Limit Session 2: Weak/loose table where I was catching cards. I can think of two mistakes that involved my not calling on the river when the pot was big enough to justify calling with a weak pair, but otherwise I was pretty happy with my playing overall. I still need to bet better at counting up the pot and doing the DIPO calculations - I'm still playing on very squirrely math. Big win.

NL Session 2: This time I play little less rashly, win one decent pot from a smaller stack all -in when I had a PP better than the board, push all-in on another hand with top pair, queen kicker, only to have my caller have the exact same hand, and otherwise I limp a lot, catch little, and frequently fold my limp to a raise. There were a surprising number of unraised pots, however. Slight loss.

$ Watch

Big jump to $294.57. I took second place and a 'chop' in two 20$ sngs yesterday.

The chop was interesting. We were down to the last two, and we had a coin flip when I was the chip leader, and I lost it, so the stack sizes were 3 to 1 in my opponents favor. He offered to send me 10$ if I sat out the duration and let him win. We had been chatting so I decided to take a chance and trust him at his word. Sure enough, he sent the money, so I got 2nd place plus 10$ for taking a dive when I was down in chips at a high blind stage.

I also pulled a really cute maneuver in the 2nd tourney. There was a 'table captain' from the very first hand, who had a habit of sniffing for weakness and making outrageous reraises when a tiny reraise would have been enough to take the hand. This is obviously a candidate for a well timed slow-play, which went like this:

ME: JJ, TC is in the BB, there have been two limpers, so I can't just limp in. The TC hadn't backed down to anything less than 8BB, so I went with 4BB, which could easily be interpreted as Big Slick.

The TC calls, of course. He had been calling lots of raises, and wagering that his opponent had missed the flop or was too scared to bet a small pocket pair into any flop, so I expected his call. The two limpers folded, so everything is according to plan.

Flop J-x-x

Perfect: Now the question is: How can I appear weak enough that he'll come over the top? Oh! How about a micro-bet.

I make the smallest bet possible, and he reraises me to all-in. Mission accomplished. I call, and he doesn't have a pair or a draw, and fails to catch runner-runner ace to beat me.

This play shouldn't work on observant or timid opponents, but against an agressive lunkhead, it's a decent play.

$220.59. I lose a bunch of money on cash tables, then I try a 180 player 20$ tourney. I make it down to the final 12 with about 4M, catch AA and get into an all-in battle with 66, who catches his six where else but on the river?

Expensive Omaha Lesson

$233.54. I lost about $30 last night on pot-limit NLHE with .10/.25 blinds, primarly from raising with nice starters, and not believing the lousy hands my opponents called and beat me with, in one case 92s, in two other cases Q5s.

Then I took 1st out of 18 in a 10$ sng. I was in the middle of the pack till we consolidated to one table, then I was always in the bottom three till we were down to 5, then I made a move with 33 to win the coin flip against KTo, doubled up, and quickly became a contender. After much shucking, jiving and folding, I keep outlasting and eliminating the others. Here's a really interesting hand, I'm not sure if I made a good play, but I'm going to look up the odds right now.

Local Charity Tourney

I hadn't played any charity tourneys before, and I doubt I'll play many more. This one supported our local sports program, and I hoped I might meet a few more local players, so I gave it a try, despite an awful case of the flu.

Entry Fee: 50$, $30 of which goes into the prize pool. (I asked when I paid and they said 60%. When they started, they announced 87 players, and read out the prizes, which added up to $2610. You do the math and tell me if it's 60%. It's close enough for me.)

Here's a blow by blow:
3000 starting chips, table of 10, starting blinds 25/50. I get the button.
Hand 1: I catch AQ, make a bump raise, catch top pair, and milk my one caller on the flop and turn for microbets. He folds on the turn. Chip count 3200 (40M +)
Hands 2-8 it's a generally tight/cautious crowd. People are showing hands like JJ and KK, and many players are not even agressive even with monsters.

Blind up at hand 9 One deck, 20 minute blinds. :-(
My chip count is still 3200, so about 20M

Hand 9: I'm in BB with a mediocre holding and 3 limpers. I miss the flop and fold to a pot-sized bet.

Hand 10: SB I fold to a big pre-flop raise.

Hand 12: I get QJs one off the button and the flop comes Qxx, no flush draw. One player makes a probe bet and I raise to pot-sized. He calls, and checks the turn. I feel I'm beat because he's been playing tight, and I felt he could reasonably hold AQ, KQ or trips. I check the turn, and he makes a teaser bet on the river, which I fold to. The teaser bet was 10% of my stack. If my M was was a little higher I might have called, but I felt my kicker was too weak. Chip Count: 2450 - 16M ish

Hand 14: I catch AKo, and make a 5BB raise and get two callers. I miss the flop and make a continuation bet, P1 calls, and P2 goes all in for 150 more. Against my better judgement I call, and P1 also calls. P1 and I check down the turn and river, and it turns out that NOBODY has a pair, and two players have A. My King kicker holds, and the whole table groans. Chip count 4700 - 31M.

Hand 18: Binds are up to 100/200. :-( - 16M
Hand 18: I'm BB for 200, and miss the flop. Out.
Hand 19, one UTG limper, and when I look I've got QQ. I raise to 600, BB folds, utg limper calls.

Flop is single suited, but not matching my queens. I figure I'm a lock, so I bet the pot, and this smaller stack goes all-in for 900 more, so I can pay 900 to stay in a 3200 pot. Given the level of play, I was expecting a stone cold desperation play, so I call. He flips 34s which caught his flush. I have two pair on the turn and fail to suck out with a boat.

This really steamed me. If he had flipped over AK of the suit, or even trips, I could have lived with this, but his pre-flop call was SO bad.
Chip count 2000 - 7M.

Hand 21, I'm still on tilt, in late position and everybody before me had folded, and I've got K8s. I figure this is good enough for a cold-blooded blind steal, so I put all my chips in the middle, expecting no resistance. The exact same player with the 34s calls, turns over AA, and I fail to suck out.

I could have waited for better cards, but I still don't think the blind steal was a bad decision. I was at 7M, and don't forget that the blinds were pretty much going up every time they came to me, so I maybe had 8 more hands before I was blinded down to 'can't wait for cards' mode, so I felt I needed to make any steal I could.

When it was down to two of us, I put all my money on top pair. My opponent put all of his money on trips. Oops.

$ watch

$179.84. All of the gains from the last $ watch are from Omaha, where I discovered that some the players are even worse and more clueless than in some hold'em tournaments. It only takes one or two bad players to make for a profitable table. I'm not the king of Omaha, but I do understand what the nuts look like, and how to make chasers pay for their longshot draws.

$ watch

$156.84, just after having taken 2nd in an 18 player 5$ tourney. During the first five rounds I took one small pot and bled and bled and bled. Then I doubled up from 5M with 89o against AT, and the rest was history ;-) That was the only suckout I required, in any case.

These 18 player sngs are actually tougher for me than the 45 player, because it goes down to a short-handed table by the third level and doesn't go back to a full table till at least the 6th level. In the 45 player, it doesn't go below seven players till about the 7th level, so the blinds aren't as fast coming.

A Stupid Play with Big Slick

I'm in a 9 player low stakes SNG, down to four players. I've been able to classify one as overly agressive, one as very straightforward, and the last one had been so inactive that I couldn't get a read on them. Blinds are at 50/100 and my stack is about 2700, so I'm not in awful shape if I can be patient.

I get AKo utg, and limp it for 100, expecting the agressive player to reraise me, and he doesn't disappoint, making it 300.

The cipher folds, and the predictable one raises to 900.

At this point, it would have been very sensible to forget about the agressive one, flat call this monster raise and let the flop make the remaining decision for me. Instead, I push all in, and I get a call from the predictable player who has a few more chips than me and has QQ.

I miss the coin toss.

If I had played it smartly, I would have licked my wounds at the flop and still been in contention for at least third prize rather than going out on the bubble.

D'oh!

Back in Black

I've been yo-yo-ing between 85$ and $105 since I last gave a cash update, but I finally made a decent jump up to $132.99 last night, taking 2nd out of 45 at a $5.50 game. Yay.

Here's the suckout I needed to survive in last night's game.

Final Table
Me: JTo in the SB I'm low stack-ish among the final 8. I raise half my stack when it's been folded around to me.
Them: 99 pushes all-in, and I call.

So we're back at the coin flip.

Flop: 4AK rainbow
I'm only the %39.60 underdog here, so I guess catching my queen, one of 10 outs was not a big suck out.

I'm glad my chips were already in though, as it would have been damn near impossible to stick around for that turn if I had chips left to conserve.

Good night for suckouts - for other people

I guess I can't let bad plays and bad beats get me down. While these suckouts happen to me more than occasionally, they only happen because I started out with the best hand. What I find more perturbing is when I absolutely cannot get action on my decent hands: those tourneys are much harder to win.

Bad Beat #1
2nd level of 45 player sng, I'm in the BB with Ad 4d - about 7 limpers.

Flop 235 rainbow, so I've got the nuts (although you can't rule out 46o, I figured I could take my chances). I bet the pot.

2nd player to act, with just a few less chips than me, goes all in. It's an obvious call.

He flips TT

Me: 95.05% to win

Turn: T
I'm still 70% to win.

And he pairs the 3.

Bummer

Bad Beat/Play #2
9 player sng, blinds are 75/150, 6 players remaining

I have 77.

Two clownfish limp in ahead of me, so I raise to 4BB (about 1/3 of any of our stacks), one stays, one goes.

Flop 689 rainbow
I make the probe bet, he stays.

Turn 7

At this point I push all-in. I'm pot-committed with only 4M if I fold, and unless he's got trips or AT, I've got the best hand right now. If I'm beat, I'm beat.
