Still thinkin' about yesterday's big tourney. That's a nice blind structure for on-line, and it gives a better feel for what 3 hour blinds at a live tourney must be like.
Here's a grab bag of hands.
FNJ - Hand 23 Example of how tight the table was. I also got freebies with 36os, so I won't bitch too much about this.

FNJ - Hand 90 - TioAlberto (the one I made the big fold to) shows that he's even tighter and more feared, stealing the blinds with a 1BB raise from 2nd to act.
FNJ - Hand 92 - I throw away 33 utg, rather than limp and fold to a raise, or risk looking like I'm stealing too often.
FNJ - Hand 102 - I have played 101 hands tightly, and only slightly grown my stack. My perfect moment comes along, in which the table bully tries to over-the-top me. Given his table play, I would have gone all-in with as low as JJ. Any lower, and I probably would not reraise unless I was sure this was a steal.
Note that this table bully actually makes it to the final table, which surprised me, since he couldn't possibly have the cards he represented with his bluffs all the time.

FNJ - Hand 123 - I've continued as tight as I was before the double up, but this player, very active, felt that his blinds were not to be trifled with. He asks me a question on the flop, and I answer him in the affirmative. I could have called his reraise and fished for more chips, but I saw two possible draws on the board and preferred to end the hand immediately. As it was, I increased my stack by 33% without seeing the river.

bottom two pair vs (top pair & runner-runner straight draw)
This was one of my early double up hands. I'd like to see what the odds were now that the dust had settled.
4 limpers, I'm in BB w/T7os
(This has been a tight-ish table, far from the typical on-line game)
Flop QT7 - two suited
I make a potsized bet, and get reraised by one player
After much consideration, I figure he's either got top pair or a strong draw, and I must be ahead either way. I figured he would raise w/QQ or TT, and he was also in good position for an isolation raise on the early limpers w/77 (one of the two early limpers was playing very agressively).
I give him the all-in question, and he says yes, and flips QJos.
T7 is the 69.70% favorite
QJ is the 30.30 underdog
I make my boat, and he fails to make a bigger boat to settle the argument
Let's do the math of the other hands I had put him on.
T7 vs KJ
I am the 67.17% fave
T7 vs 89 with a flush draw
Actually I'm still the 52.52% favorite
T7 vs a high card AQ flush draw
Now I am the 48.18% underdog, but I was still getting appropriate pot odds for this move.
T7 vs nightmate 77
My two outer is 9.09% chance to hit
T7 vs an oddly limped QQ
Only runner runner 10s or 7s can save me 0.20%
Again, absolutely he couldn't have limped QQ in this context.
T7 vs limped TT
I need runner-runner queens for a tie, or runner runner 7s to win.
0.10% to win
0.30 to tie
But again, the only nightmare hand I could reasonably put him on was 77, and this player had been agressive enough that I felt he would have raised on any pocket pair.

(a pair, flush draw, inside straigh draw) vs AA
UTG limps in, I'm in the BB w/ Td 7d
Flop
7h 8d Jd
I now have a pair, a flush draw and an inside straight draw, so I bet the pot, and the limper comes over the top. I figure I'm ahead, so I go all-in. He flips over AA.
But look at all the outs!
I was the 53.13% fave when I went all-in. My other option was calling his reraise, but I felt that if I hit, I'd get no action, and if I failed to hit, I'd have to pay even more to see the river.
The turn didn't help, so I was now the 36.36% underdog. River didn't help either.
BTW - The guy who knocked me out of the Monte Carlo roll made it to 3rd place. I definitely learned a big lesson at that game. It was the final two tables and I had watched this guy play tight for at least 40 hands, and I had bet the flop and river with trips and he wasn't going away. I should have taken that as a sign of something. I only hope I'll remember this at the next big tourney.

PS #17272491
Sunday 2PM EST. Look for me.
2nd stage - 1960 in chips 41 out of 129 avg 1790 chips
end of 2nd stage - 1705 in chips, 59 out of 104, avg 2221
I have seen the flop 8 out of 72 times, and made one steal, one semi-bluff, and one big laydown to an all-in with a pair of aces on the flop and king kicker
Start of 4th stage - 3035 in chips, 30 out of 75, avg 3080
I doubled up with AA
End of 4th Stage - 7570 in chips, 11 out of 52, avg 4442
I failed to hit a couple pot odds problems, and doubled up w/T7os from the big blind with five limpers when I hit the flop.
early 5th stage (100/200) 5054 in chips, 18 out of 29, avg 7965
3rd break, entering 7th stage (100/200 & 25)14,108 in chips, 8 out of 16, avg stack 14437
7th stage eliminate as #15 out of 154.
I had a decent atack (15K) and I limped AJos utg and there was a 1BB raise, and one other caller. I call.
Flop JJK
I bet the same bet I got reraised on the prior two hands I'd played at that table and get one calle.
Turn Q
I bet again, get called again.
River Blank
I bet again, and get an all-in reraise from a tight-ish player. I should have smelled a rat, but didn't and called to see KK, his boat beating my trips.
Dumbass. If I had folded at the all-in, I still had 15M or more, and was still in the hunt.
Two hands later, with 5M, I go all-in w/QJs, and lose to A5os.

FNJ - You're 7.5 to 1 to hit trips, limped in cheap hoping for pot odds. When it comes back to you you're getting 7 to 1 odds to call, so it wasn't a ridiculous call. If md1 had raise to 3 or 4BB, you wouldn't be getting the odds you require to make this call at a tight table. Of course, on-line if you hit trips, you have a decent chance of collecting somebody's all-in bet if they've got two pair.
The pot is now 400 in chips, and you've got 1145 in your stack. I'm not crazy about being the low stack compared to the other three in the pot and rolling the dice like this. Limping pockets is a better play when you can better afford to miss and throw them away.

FNJ - Jefrock had been doing probe bets on good hands or on every flop he sees? I like your raise of 3/4 of the pot, although you could certainly be facing an outside straight draw (KJ) with a possible runner-runner flush draw. If such a draw exists, with 31.5% on 8 outs in two cards, you are still offering them reasonable odds on the draw. 750 to 250 is 33% bet for the microbetter, and the other people have a 750 to 300 shot, which is still not ridiculous for the outside draw.
Of course, had you been paying attention to the other hands MD1 raised with? If he bets 2BB on pocket pairs, such as TT or QQ, you may already be facing a one-outer against higher trips.

FNJ -A blank, and you've gone all-in? I think an all-in smells of desperation, but you were the low stack and you actually did want callers if you were in the lead, which you were. If you're in the lead in the hand and low-stacked at the table, you want to triple up if at all possible.

And Md1 did a bump raise with big slick off, and stayed for two cards with the inside draw. You played this right and got sucked out. What if everybody played correctly all the time? That would actually be worse, because when you hit your trips and bet them on the flop, everybody folds, and you didn't collect 7.5 to 1 for playing 44, so you should be happy to get these callers despite the suckouts.
Hey, last night I went all-in on a flopped straight, and one clownfish called me with an inside straight draw or runner-runner flush draw. I loved it. Of course, he hit a royal flush, but them's the breaks.
How embarrassing would it be to tell your buddies about your royal flush and you had to confess to you calling an all-in with an inside straight draw to see it?

Fancy meeting you here!
Last night I hit a handful of cheapo tourneys on Pokertards, and at my last turbo cheapo for the evening, I found myself at the table with somebody I actually know in person, Ghost from my social group.
Natch, Ghost and I were the top two spots. Ghost had to suck out two hands in a row to become the chip leader, and then had a 6 to 1 chip lead when we were two handed. If I get bored some other day, I might just blog the tourney for fun.

Chip and a Chair - Sunday 2 PM
I am in the 2 PM Monte Carlo Match tomorrow on PokerTards. Wish me luck.
At the moment there are only 120 signed up, which is a pleasant surprise, as I wondered if I would have to battle 1000 people for the MC seat. There still may be more signed up in the meantime, but even if there's 200, I feel like I'll have some chance if I bring my A game, but I'm trying not to go into daydreaming mode where I've skipped the playoffs and am already mentally at the world series.

The T 5 Soooted Mystery
In the prior entry, I look at some donk hands, and was surprised to see Ten-Five suited doing so well, but I missed something important: Nobody else had a flush draw and nobody else had a ten.
Start doing simulations with a higher club, or a counterfeited ten, and the chances drop down to under Ten Percent in the worst of circumstances, and about 15% in many cases. That's still not zero, I guess.

On-line donkfest simulation
Since I'm playing so many donk tourneys, let's do a little statistical analysis.
First level of a 1500 chip tourney, blinds 10/20
Let's pick four random donk hands and something for ourselves
P1: 5c Tc (yes, people will limp this @20, and even call a 4BB raise with it.)
P2: Qd Jh (even donks get playable card, right?)
P3: 3s 4s (A little too low for my tastes, but...)
P4: Ah 7h (Not a donk hand, or maybe I'm a donk...)
And now let's see some probabilities if I join in the mix with some cards.
Small suited connectors - not dominated in the flush
9d 8d
P1: 19.06%
P2: 20.23%
P3: 18.86%
P4: 21.67%
ME: 20.06
Hmm, that's not a ridiculous distribution, even for suited 34, is it?
Dominated small suited
9h 8h
My hand drops to 15.49, P1 goes up to 20%, P2 goes up to 23.75%, and even P3 goes up to 20.21%. P4 also drops a point for the flush cards gone.
Low pocket pair not dominated
6s 6d
P1: 18.49%
P2: 23.70%
P3: 15.88%
P4: 22.89%
P5: 18.90
Of course, unless I hit trips I usually have to give them up unless nobody bets at the flop.
Low pocket pair dominated
5s 5d
P1: 16.34%
P2: 27.90%
P3: 15.15%
P4: 27.67%
P5: 11.59%
And my pocket pairs have become a dog. Either I hit the flop or get the heck out.
High Pocket pair not dominated
Ks Kd
P1: 17.07%
P2: 10.69%
P3: 17.40%
P4: 21.87%
ME: 32.86%
Looks like I need a healthy raise here to make some magic.
High Pocket pair dominated
Js Jd
P1: 17.16%
P2: 16.56%
P3: 18.30%
P4: 24.50%
ME: 22.31%
Hmm, T5 suited is not a ridiculous hand, is it? Of course, it's really tough to know for certain that your top pair or two pair is good, so it's probably pretty easy to lose some money when your cards hit halfway.

Tourney Chops
I'm continuing to work on my tournament chops.
Strengths: I'm getting better at reading on-line opponents through their betting patterns, paying close attention not just to show-downs, but also to betting frequency and the size of bets that don't get called, and taking copious notes on my opponents. Also, when I identify players who are not very good, I'm getting better at taking the situation seriously even when I don't take the player seriously. I won't call a raise from a clown unless the pot odds are right for a drawing hand, or I've got a hand.
Weakness: I've still got problems with the final table, when blinds are up. I get a little too anxious and push weaker hands farther than I should. That's a tricky balance to strike and something I need to work on. I've been playing lots of small (less than 100), cheap tourneys to work on this.
Here's an interesting hand in a 45 player tourney last night.
ME: Tc Js - I limp (early in the blind structure), the pot is raised to 3BB but there are five others so pot odds justify my calling the raise.
Flop: 9c Kc Qd
An ideal flop, wouldn't you say? Now if I can get rid of the flush chasers...
I bet 3/4 of the pot and get two callers
Turn: 2d
A great card! Unless somebody was staying for the runner runner flush with a King of Diamonds, that card helped nobody.
But what's this? The two other stacks (I had doubled up a few hands earlier) have both gone all-in on my 1/2 pot raise! I'm sure I've got the best hand right now, so I call them to see
P1: Kh Td
Me: Tc Js
P3: 7c 8c
And not only does player 3 (the smallest stack) hit their flush, P1 hits their miracle card to split the side pot with me:
Jc
Let's take a look at those percentages:
Pre flop
P1: 42.67%
ME: 21.83%
P3: 33.27%
I'm dominated. Glad I didn't know that.
Flop
P1: 2.66% (But a 7.42% for a tie)
ME: 59.25%
P3: 30.68%
I guess a pot-sized bet is better for chasing out the flush, huh?
P1: 4.76% chance for a tie only
ME: 76.19% to win, 4.76% for a tie.
P3: 19.05% to win.
You might question P3 going all-in on the turn, as did I. However, P3 tripled up after taking this chance, and I saw this one again at the final table. I finished third and that player was down to heads-up for taking the whole thing. I guess it was a calculated risk, as opposed to a donk move.

Idiot End of the Straight Flush
My fourth straight flush in a short period, this time I lost.
Low Limit on-line cash table, I limp in mid-position
Kc 2c
About 4 other limpers
Flop
3c 4c 5c
I make a bet to try to push away Ace of clubs
Turn
Qh
I bet the sucker again, one caller
River 6c
I get all excited about my straight flush and re-raise. I only remember that I don't have the nuts when he reraises me.
I call, he turns over Jd 7c for the high straight flush.

Being the 58% Fave isn't enough
Here's an interesting suck out all-in battle.
7h9h
QdQc
Ks7c
You would think the 79 was a serious underdog, drawing to one card only, below everybody elses card, wouldn't you?
The percentages are:
18.4%
58.5%
23.0%
But the perfect flop comes for 79
79T rainbow
and the percentages are now:
59.1
28.3
12.6
But wait, the turn comes:
J !
And the percentages barely change even with the outside draw for QQ
64.3%
31.0%
4.8%
Sorry, I wasn't the 79, and I didn't hit my straight to recover my place in the pecking order.

Ho hum - another straight flush
Last night I was playing limit, and limped 6c7c. Well, actually, I limped, I was raised, and I three bet to see where my opponent was at. The opponent didn't cap.
I catch four to a flush on the flop, and an outside straight flush draw. The turn comes with the King of clubs, so I may possibly be behind a stronger flush draw. The river hits my nine of clubs for the straight flush, and once I figure out that I'm ahead of the Ace of clubs, I reraise on the river.
At least one person at the table questioned my three bet with 67 suited. It may not have been correct, but I think I was loosely following the recommendations in 'Small Stakes Hold 'em' by the two plus two guys. Sometimes its good to goose the pot preflop, so that if you hit, they won't want to get away when they miss the flop.
That's three straight flushes in one week. I also won a frequent player points free roll (one of ten winners) and now am entered in a free roll for entry to a European event. I'll probably be daydreaming too much about the prize to play my best, but I'll try anyhow.

KK v AK v AQ
In a 180 player tourney, the following hand happened when we were down to 80 players.
Nine player table
Me: Kc Ks, second to act.
Blinds are 59/100, and I'm down to 2000 in chips after just losing a big pot.
I limp as second to act to open, P3, P4 fold
P5 raise to 400
P6 calls 400
Folds around to me, I reraise to all-in and I get two callers. Everybody is all in and we see:
Me: Kc Kx
P5: Ad Kh
P6: As Qd
I'm the 73 percent favorite, AK is 16.7, AQ is 10.3
Flop :T62 Rainbod
I'm the 87.2 fave, 10.5 for AK, 2.3 for AQ
Turn: Blank
I'm now the 95.2 fave
Of course, you know what hits on the river!

Big Hands
December 2005 was a good month for getting big hands, maybe because I played too much?
Dec 17, 2005 - Four Kings at a live tournament at RCHeli's.
Dec 25, 2005 - Four sixes at a casino.
Dec 29, 2005 - Queen High Straight Flush in an on-line tournament, which was my best hand ever at the time.
Dec 30, 2005 - King High Straight Flush in a ring game on-line, my best hand ever.

AZ Casino 4
A break-even evening, except I was generous tipper in the wee hours of Xmas morning, so I lost about $15. Two hands worth writing home about.
First Hand of the evening, I'm the BB, and pick up QJos with five limpers.
Flop: 9TK Rainbow.
(I've got the nut straight)
I check, somebody else bets, three callers, so I call.
Turn: 8: I check, initial better bets, three folds, I raise, and we cap it.
River: 9. I bet, and get re-raised, and I call.
The agressive bettor turned his two pair into the miracle boat for a big hand, and it took me hours and hours to make back what I lost on that suck out.
Wee hours of the morning, short-handed table.
Two limpers, I'm the BB with J6os.
Flop: 666 - It checks around.
Turn: X - checks around
River - I check again, hoping for a re-raise. It gets checked down.
After the rake and an excessive tip for the dealer, I get a pot of 5$ for my quads.

Casino AZ -Part 3
Perhaps my best casino session ever. In four hours I walked out with 5 (five) times my initial buy-in.
I left when I ended up at a table with two whack jobs seated next to one another. One would bet nothing, and the other would raise with nothing. That's just too dangerous to mess with.

Scottsdale Casino, Part 2
I went back the next day, and it seemed like I must have please the poker gods. Nobody was catching their 15% cards to river me, and more than made up for the losses of the prior night. I had the hottest streak of cards I've ever experienced, winning 5 consecutive pots, and winning mabe 10 out of 20 pots in two trips around the table.
A typical hand - I'm in the kill pot (double the betting, and I'm the obligatory straddle), and five callers are in, and I look down at pocket fours and check.
Two suited flop, 984, and I bet it to the end, and my only caller through the river seemed to think that a pair was going to be good enough.
Nobody ever seemed to catch flushes or trip up when playing second pair against my top pair. Such a nice evening.
